Kalkan
A beautiful little Mediterranean harbour village, full of character, charm and hospitality. Bougainvillea covered, wooden balconied villas line the steep cobbled streets leading down to the harbour. Excellent and reasonably priced rooftop restaurants and pavement cafes abound. Fascinating shops selling wonderful Turkish rugs, silver, jewellery and other interesting items are perfect for browsing – and buying !! The local shopkeepers are always helpful but there is never any hassle or pressure to buy – you are more likely to be offered a glass of Turkish tea and a chat !! There is always time for both in Kalkan. If wandering down the narrow streets, browsing in the many shops, stopping for coffees, snack lunches, sipping a cool drink by the harbour is your idea of a holiday, it’s perfect. For the more energetic there are some wonderful boat and swimming trips, visits to ancient historical sites, and walking tours in the nearby mountains which can be organised from within the village.
Kalkan has a clean pebble beach with sparkling blue water 15 minutes easy walk from the Villa. Water taxis will take you to nearby beach clubs, with bathing platforms for swimming and with restaurant facilities. There are boat trips to outlying islands.
Close by are Kaputas with a sandy beach at the bottom of a ravine. It is a 15 min drive away with a frequent Dolmus service, or by boat from the harbour. Patara beach, the longest in Southern Turkey, is about a 20 minute drive by car or dolmus and has 18km of unspoilt white sands. Also close are Saklikent Canyon, a 30 min drive. Xanthos, the ancient capital of Lycia, 30 min drive. Myra (rock tombs and amphitheatre) 1.5 hour drive, Kekova (sunken city) 1 hour drive or a half day trip in a glass bottomed boat.
