Local Area

Sailing, fishing, water-skiing and wind surfing take place in the bay or estuary; and trips can be made to Lundy Island from Bideford or Ilfracombe.

There is good bathing and surfing on the two mile long sandy beach at Westward Ho! (about 1.5 miles away), and the large sandy beach at Instow is immediately opposite across the River Torridge.

Bideford, providing a wider range of shops and a large supermarket is three miles away, and the old market towns of Barnstaple and Great Torrington are within very easy reach. The A39 Atlantic Highway from Bideford goes through picturesque villages and has breathtaking views down into Cornwall. Bude is within very easy reach.

Bird watching is popular and there are long walks along the cliffs beyond Westward Ho! And on Northam Burrows between Appledore and Westward Ho! Exmoor is easily reached.

There are public Tennis courts at Westward Ho!, and notable golf courses at Westward Ho! (Royal North Devon) and Saunton, at which visitors are welcomed. There is an indoor pool at nearby Northam.

Appledore makes an excellent centre from which to explore North Devon and Exmoor – it is close to the Tarka trail for cycling and walking and within easy reach of other well known North Devon attractions such as Clovelly.
